Detials of the 2010 show will be added as soon as they are
available. The following information relates to the 2009 show.
The Shire Horse of today is the descendant of the Old English
War Horse that were used in years gone by to carry Warriors with heavy armour
into battles, these were really thick set horses about 16 hands (1 hand of
horse measurements is 4 inches) but today’s Shire Horses are bred to
be more versatile and some bigger up to 19 hands with less feather (hair) and
that lovely silky on their legs, and very smart, with some black horses with
white legs and some bay and others grey. Many are kept by Breweries for Show
purposes and Breeders at Agricultural Shows, and who do really take pride
of place.
One young lovely 3 year old grey horse called Celt that
was brought to Ruthin Show last year along with another from Dyfed Shire
Horse Farm, Pembrokeshire, and was amongst the prize winners was eventually
sold a few weeks later to the Household Cavalry and will no doubt be seen
at major events carrying the drums and leading the Parades. Shire Horses
can also be seen at ploughing matches.
This year we will have lovely Shire Horses along with other breeds at the
Ruthin Show on Saturday August 8th so please come along and enjoy yourselves
seeing these magnificent animals.
This year we are holding a Horse Show with Classes for most of the breeds
of horses in this Country.
2008 Last year after a few years we restarted the Shire Horse Classes, which
proved very successful with top Exhibitors coming from Shropshire, Flintshire,
Pembrokeshire and Denbighshire, with Celt a lovely 3 year old lovely grey
horse brought there from the Dyfed Shire Horse Centre and being amongst the
prize winners and eventually being sold to the Household Cavalry.
We also had Heavy Horse Turnouts and Decorated Horses which proved a great
attraction.
